Sinhala Tamil new Year.

April 17, 2009

betel11

In April (the month of Bak) when the sun moves from the Meena Rashiya (House of Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (House of Aries) Sri Lankans begin celebrating their National New Year Aluth Avurudhu in Sinhala and Puththandu in Tamil.  However, unlike the usual practice where the new year begins at midnight, the National New Year begins at the time determined by the astrologers. Not only the beginning of the new year but the conclusion of the old year is also specified by the astrologers. And unlike the customary ending and beginning of new year, there is a period of a few hours in between the conclusion of the Old Year and the commencement of the New Year , which is called the nona gathe (neutral period). During this time one is expected to keep off from all types of work and engage solely in religious activities.

This also coincides with the time when the harvest ends, so the colorful fruit from the trees is collected in bulk to fuel the week-long celebrations. Festivities are prepared well in advance and most of the country grinds to a halt as hundreds travel home to be with their families and stores close down in their wake – it can be impossible to track down the simplest of things just before it all starts.

The rituals begin with the cleaning of the house and lighting of an oil lamp, and women congregate to bash on the raban (drum) to warn others of the incipient change in the year. If you fail to hear this, a storm of firecrackers is bound to hammer the point home.

Families indulge in a variety of rituals which are carefully determined by astrological calculations – from lighting the fire to making the kiri (milk rice) bath, to entering into the first business transaction and eating the first morsels.

Once these are done, the partying really begins as families mingle in the streets, homes are thrown open and children are let out to play. The ubiquitous plantain is dished out alongside celebratory feasts of kaung (small oil cake) and kokis (crisp and light sweetmeat, originally from the Netherlands).

Aurudu has become an important national holiday for both the cultures of the Sinhalese Buddhists and the Tamil Hindu Sri Lankans, and is unique as such, as it is not celebrated elsewhere in the world. Indeed wealthy Sri Lankans make it an excuse to come home from wherever they are to make it a long holiday season.

Those who can’t handle the heat of the pre-monsoon season in the south escape to the cooler hills and indulge in the expensive pastimes of the elite – such as polo, golf, tennis and motor racing.

Making the decision to take a gap year. Reassuring parents about taking a gap year.

Sri Lanka is not a strange place. It is a major holiday destination in the world, situated just 20 miles off India, the island formerly known as Ceylon is home to 21 million people. The Resplendent Isle is one of gorgeous beaches, famous for old British tea plantations and ancient cities, Scuba dive, elephant orphanage, a lagoon of singing fish, dense jungle, many of modern Buddhist shrines and temples.

How to stay safe in another country.
Sri Lanka is always full of tourists and there are large number of tourist beach hotels scattered all over the Island. These can be expensive for students. In order to enjoy the rich and varied holiday assets of the country on a modest budget, the Ceylon Tourist Board has set up a network of Resorts called Rest Houses in prime locations in Nuwara Eliya, Bandarawela, Anuradhapura, Kataragama and Bentota. Set in exceptionally scenic and salubrious locations in premier hill-stations, hallowed and historic shrines and beaches, these resorts also offer superb sightseeing with the bonus of moderately priced, comfortable “home away from home” accommodation with an authentic Sri Lankan flavor and comprehensive facilities. (http://www.srilankatourism.org/holiday.php)
Deciding on travelling with friends or going solo.
Always better if you have two or three people in one group.
Credit cards and debit cards.
Credit cards are acceptable in tourist hotels and restaurants. But not in local and village boutiques.
Brief information on a variety of neighboring countries.
Recommend to visit India, Thailand Singapore and Japan while you are living in this part of the world.

Power Plant for Batuwangala Maha Vidyalaya..

January 1, 2009

Potential benefits to the community from the E Village
1. Promote cooperation and networking among local CBOs
Although several Community Based Organizations (CBOs) exist in the Batuwangala village they are rather weak due to poor communication and organizational capacity. However, CBOs are an integral part of village life and often play a role in everyday lives of people as well as during major events in the community. The E village concept could initiate networking among the different CBOs in order to share resources and also improve communication between each other.
2. Strengthen local livelihood strategies
Agriculture and tea are the main sources of livelihood in the area. The E village could be a source of information to the community that would enable them to gain access to useful information such as current market prices, new technology and to developments in the sector. Lack of information and knowledge is one of the main reasons why agriculture small holders are disempowered and lack the capacity to negotiate better terms and conditions. The E Village could be a means by which this issue is addressed.

3. Creating career opportunities for youth
Youth unemployment is a pressing problem in Sri Lanka, particularly among rural youth. The E Village presents an opportunity for introducing youth to potential career and job opportunities in a range of areas. Our intention is not to merely train youth in ICT and send them off to seek jobs outside, but also to encourage youth to use ICT and technology to generate opportunities and to initiate activities within the community as well. For example, there are many services that are needed within the area if ICT accessibility in rural areas is to be truly a reality; the E village could be the source of skilled personnel for such services to be initiated and developed.
Proposed activities:
1.

Constraints:
The major problem we face currently are on going costs for electricity and internet connection. While the E Village intends to eventually financially sustainable, this is not immediately possible. We propose the following:
1. Generation of a mini hydro power plant
A member of the community has a mini hydro power plant which he is willing to share with the E Village. We propose to link this power plant to the school which would generate enough electricity for the entire school as well as the computer lab. If we are successful with this we would be able to use the funds saved by the school for electricity to be used for paying the internet costs. Students could also contribute to the internet costs.
Approximate Cost : Rs 800,000
We would like every body to join with us.please contact us for more information.
